7 Child Wardrobe Tips for your photos

Ahhhh children. I don't know about your kids, but mine always seem to look like they just came out the heaviest, dirtiest play session of all time. And this about 5 minutes after I have done the final brush stroke of hair. My oldest daughter (now 16) used to let me style her outfits for years, but my youngest (now 7) has had a strong opinion on her wardrobe since she could talk. Even now, I struggle with negotiations on wearing jeans (she prefers leggings) or just plain matching. When it comes to trying to pull it together for photos, it can feel completely overwhelming, so I have put together a few tips to help you pick out wardrobe for your kids sessions.

1. Timeless always has a place.

There is something that is so pure about the timelessness of certain childrens' fashion. A plain white lace dress with a simple bow. Simple khaki paints with a button down shirt and suspenders or event the occasional sailor outfit. These outfits will always stand the test of time, and will never go out of style.

2. Dress your kiddos in clothes that fit perfectly, not with room to grow.

I get it - buying clothes that you kid will grow out of in a few months is not the most favorite of parents. I know that when I buy clothes for my kiddo, I usually make sure that there is room to grow. But even if you child may only wear the outfit for a few months, it’ll look much better than putting them in something that they still need to grow into. Go a size smaller in jackets, cardigans or blazers. A too-big jean jacket, blazer, sweat shirt, sweater or hoodie will not compliment shape. It looks as sloppy on children as it does adults.

3. Shoes are a very important part of wardrobe.

How many times have you caved in shoe aisle and purchased those light up character sneakers (I cannot count the number of times I have!). But when it comes to capturing moments, stay strong and just say no. Stay away from character shoes, flip flops, crocs. My recommendation for shoes are boots, leather sandals Converse All-Stars, Sperrys, and Mary Jane - they don't need to be name brands but the styles hold true. And always, barefoot is an adorable option, especially with babies. I’d much rather see bare feet than the bottom of their shoes.

4. Remember, coordinating your childrens’ outfits is key. Not matching.

5. Layers are just as important for child wardrobe as it is for yours.

Hats, glasses, vests, bow ties, cardigans, tights or leggings under a skirt. I do recommend making the outer layer (blazer, cardi, jacket) fit snugly. I recommend purchasing the outer layers one size smaller than normal, because they tend to run on the bigger side. (TIP: If you don't want to purchase a size smaller - ask friends and family if they have something you can borrow for the day.)

6. Hair piece tips.

For babies, toddlers and older girls, I always recommend keeping hair accessories simple. The only time I think you can get away with a bigger hair accessory is when the child has lots of hair, or long hair. If you are looking to make a more of a statement, consider fresh or silk flowers or artfully designed into a crown for girls. Even if your baby girl doesn’t have a ton of hair, don’t feel the need to hide that adorable head behind a huge whoppin’ head piece that makes her angry because she’s pulling it off every few seconds. Simple and dainty is just as pretty and understated.

7. The most important part of putting together your child’s wardrobe is allowing their personality to come through in what they’re wearing. If your daughter has a favorite pair of boots, let her wear them (at least in a few pictures). If your child loves to wear hats and sunglasses, bring them! Whatever makes your child their own adorable, individual self, let’s focus on those things. Yes, we all want our children to look adorable and fully polished for photos, but there is something

BONUS TIP: Remember, you don't always have to go out and purchase new. In additions to asking friends and family, there are tons of consignment stores that sell gently used clothing. I have enjoyed finding near new (or sometimes NWTs) in consignment shops and walked out feeling like a champ. Baby Gap dresses for $7 anyone? Yes please!
