Tips for Different Body Shapes (for women)

The one question I get from 100% of my clients is "What should I wear?" If you have booked a session, you are probably excited to start planning your wardrobe. One of the most fun parts of preparing for your session is planning what you will wear. This is the time to really express who you are! I know some of you stress about getting your outfits together, but trust me, you don't have to. While I don't typically style my clients, here are some basic tips in preparing your outfits based on your body shape, style and personality.

1. Maxi dresses are flattering on every body type. Keep that in mind while shopping! (images courtesy of Nordstrom.com). Maxi dresses are usually a slam dunk for shoots, and they’re so versatile. Add a belt or a statement necklace with strappy sandals for the summer, or a belted fitted cardi and a scarf in the fall.

2. Skinny jeans are flattering on most women, even the curvy ones! Pair them with cute heels or wedges, and your legs look a mile long. I’m 5’4and 140 pounds, and I love my skinnies, even though I’m a little on the curvier side. If you’re overweight or don’t feel comfortable with the tighter fit, I recommend a fit called “skinny boot cut.” You can find them at American Eagle, Gap, and the Level 99 brand is amazing! 3. Take a friend shopping with you. They will see you better than you see yourself when trying on clothes. If he/she tells you it looks great, believe them! We’re our own worst critics.

4. Flaunt your best asset. I’m self conscious about thighs, but I like my arms and shoulders. So, I feel most comfortable in a maxi dress or midi dress - or even jeans. I will wear a strappy tank top or even a strapless dress, but never a mini. If you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, it will show in the final images.

5. Try something new. You obviously want to feel comfortable and confident, but try to push yourself outside the box.  Perhaps you should try on something you wouldn’t normally take off the rack.  It may be a complete disaster, but you may also find a new love! This is how I purchased on of my favorite dresses (at Marshall's so discount bonus!) If you don't have the time or desire to pick through the racks of stores like TJ Maxx or Nordstorm Rack - trying an online styling service like Stitch Fix. Let your personal stylist know you want to try something a little different and test out what they send.

We all know that fashion is a form of self-expression, so just be the best, most flattering version of you!
